Some little piggies just get lucky. When I sold 3 blonde Mangalitsa gilts and an unrelated
blonde boar from Michigan for Florida in June of 2017, they of course had no idea about their
future homes.
I had met Jim Strickland, managing partner of Blackbeard’s Ranch, an expanse of 4,530 acres
bordering the Myakka River State Park, a few month earlier, and had promised to get him some
quality breeding stock after I returned to Michigan for the Summer. Pigs actually are new to
Strickland, who has spent a lifetime raising cattle in the area, ranching mostly on leased property,
invariable encroached on by the rapid development the region has seen.
